On Guard
A Patrolman's work is never done,
He's on duty from sun to sun.
If his heart is heavy and his worries many,
He is not expected to resort to pity.
He is a man like all of the rest,
But in a category of the best.
If he is off duty and someone is in distress,
You do not have to guess if he will help them on their way.
On guard, ye who appear in an array of gray,
You are the Knights who seldom fall by the way.
Danger and distress go hand in hand,
As the Patrolman carry out their commands.
You hear the scream of a siren and the whiz of the car,
It's a Patrolman answering a wreck call.
When he arrives at the scene he finds that death has made its claim.
On guard, when you travel at high rates of speed,
Or you might meet your destiny.
Among the twisted steel and bloody glass,
He finds two hands clasped together.
With their wedding clothes and gifts, Not old,
it was easy to guess the story it told.
How sad, but yet glad to know that this time there were only two to go.
On guard, at scenes like these.
Your courage cannot afford to be lean.
The Patrolman is loved and blessed by those
who regard the law as an asset.
He is hated and envied by those who wish to destroy him
as they have themselves.
On guard, my dear and faithful friends,
Your life might be nearing an end.
This was written and dedicated to Patrolman Richard W Jackson, Carteret County, killed in the line of duty on 3 February 1949. The author, J. B. Parvin, was a Drivers License Examiner in Wilson.
